Garden waste collection

Garden waste collection is a subscription-only service where your garden waste bin is emptied fortnightly.

garden waste bin

Please remember to put your garden waste bin out at the edge of your property by 6am on your collection day. You can find out when your collection day is by using Check your bin day.

Please note this is a separate collection from your refuse and recycling bins and collection times are between 6am - 4pm. If your garden waste bin has not been emptied but your refuse/recycling bin has, please leave out until 4pm.

Only waste that is placed inside the bin will be collected and we will not empty any bins that are overflowing with the bin lid open.

In cold weather the contents of the bin can freeze making it very difficult for us to empty your bin. Please try where possible to rake through your bin the day before your collection day to ensure the material isn't frozen to the inside of the bin.

How to apply

You can apply for a bin or renew your subscription online.

Please note we do not offer a pro rata subscription. Our subscription dates run from 1 April to 31 March.

What to put in the garden waste bin

Our pdf icon recycling service guide [2Mb] has details of what you can put in your garden waste bin. Please do not put any garden waste in either the black bin for rubbish or the blue lidded recycling bin, as they will not be emptied if garden waste is present. Please don't use your green waste bin for food waste, instead you can use your green food waste caddy or a compost bin. We send our green waste to a different plant than our food and it can introduce different bacteria into the composting process.

There are some items which are classed as contamination and if your bin contains these items we will not be able to empty your bin:

  • Plastic pots
  • Large branches and wood
  • Rubble and stones
  • Soil and turf
  • Animal bedding - such as hay, straw and saw dust
  • General rubbish

There is a weight restriction on how much the vehicle can lift. Please ensure that your bin is easily manoeuvrable otherwise we may not be able to empty your bin.

How much does it cost?

You will need to buy a bin initially and pay for the collection service.

Full year subscription:

  • 120 litres - £20 for the bin plus £33 subscription
  • 240 litres - £27 for the bin plus £54 subscription

These prices are reviewed in April each year.

Please note we do not offer a pro rata subscription. Our subscription dates run from 1 April to 31 March.

If you do not wish to subscribe to the service, you can take your garden waste to one of the local community recycling centres or start composting.

Additional bins

There is no limit on the amount of garden waste bins each property can have. However, the full subscription and bin cost will apply for each bin purchased.

Compost bins

Home composting is the most environmentally friendly way to dispose of garden cuttings, fruit and vegetable peelings and other household waste. To encourage Surrey residents to start composting, a basic bin is now available for a one off charge of just £13 from the Recycle for Surrey website.
