Council Tax Support or discount fraud
Council Tax Support or discount fraud is when someone deliberately misleads the Council about their circumstances in order to obtain Council Tax Support or a discount.
There are a number of ways that people can commit Council Tax Support or discount fraud including
- Falsely claiming to be on a low income when they are actually earning a good salary. This can result in the person receiving Council Tax Support or a discount that they are not entitled to
- Falsely claiming to have certain expenses that they do not actually have. This can also result in the person receiving Council Tax Support or a discount that they are not entitled to
- Failing to report changes in their circumstances that could affect their entitlement to Council Tax Support or a discount. For example, if someone starts a new job or if they move into a new property, they are required to report these changes to the council. If they fail to do this, they may be committing fraud
