The Great Big Green Week events

Runnymede Borough Council would like to join forces with its local communities to celebrate the Great Big Green Week - 2026 from 6 to 14 June 2026.

We are planning our own events, and we would also love to collate and promote all the events being organised in the local area. Email climatechange@runnymede.gov.uk to let us know what you are planning and link your event to the ‘Runnymede Local Green Week’ when adding it to the Great Big Green Week website

We will be regularly updating these pages in the lead up to Great Big Green Week 2026. Stay tuned for information about events taking place in Runnymede or use this tool from Great Big Green Week to find events happening near you!

Englefield Green Plant Swap

  • Description: Do you have plants you want to rehome? Are you looking for new plants for your house or garden? Visitors to both centres and passers by will be able to take away and deposit plants during this period

Holme Farm Open Day – Community Workshop and Garden

  • Description: If you’ve ever wondered what happens at Holme Farm, now is your chance to find out!
    We’re throwing the gates open on Saturday 6th June at 9am, and lots of our lovely volunteers will be on hand to show some of the activities that we do - and how you can get involved, if you’d like to.
    Come and say ‘hello’, grab a drink and some cake, and see everything Holme Farm has to offer.
    Gates will close at 5pm, the last bird walk will be at 6pm.

St John’s Community Fridge

  • Date and time: Saturday 6 June 2026, 11am - 1pm

  • Organiser: St John’s Eco Church
  • Description: We run every Saturday to reduce food waste. We collect surplus food from our local supermarkets on Friday and then give the food away on Saturday. Bring a bag to take some surplus food home and speak with our team about the food that is wasted / gain some tips and tricks about what you can do to reduce food waste. Cash donations gratefully received to keep this initiative going.

Repair Clinic

  • Description: Come learn about how to give your items a second life. We will be trying to fix most things including bicycles. Preloved Music Sale

Addlestone Library – craft activity

  • Description: The focus in all services is on stewardship in all aspects of our environment.
    • 9am is a traditional service
    • 10.30am will be an interactive service with activities to develop thoughts on actions to improve our environment around us. This is a family friendly service suitable for all ages.

Egham and Staines conservation volunteers

Litter Pick

  • Description: Help to reduce the amount of photodegrading plastic, toxic cigarette butts, and more that is killing our environment. We will litter pick at a location decided beforehand. Wear comfortable shoes and bring your own gloves. All other tools will be provided.

Genesis Project 

  • Date: Thursday 11 Jun 2026
  • Time: 5:00pm - 7:00pm
  • Location: Meet next to the Egham Orbit
  • Organiser: St John’s Eco Church
  • Description: In 2025 we planted nearly 700 trees to increase the biodiversity of the area. Come see how we are managing them and give the trees a drink of water. Bring your own gloves and drinking water.

Runnymede Cooks - online vegetarian cooking class live event

  • Date: Friday 12 June 2026
  • Time: 4:00pm to 5:00pm
  • Location: To take part, simply visit the Council’s Facebook page at 4pm on the day of the event, where the session will be streamed live.

  • Description: Would you like to learn how to cook healthy, plant based meals? Join Sally Gerrard from GoodCooks for this live event online – and learn how to cook a range of family friendly recipes.

Ingredients:

  • 250g plain flour
  • 2tsp baking powder
  • 75g porridge oats
  • 3 medium eggs
  • 175g caster sugar
  • 250 ml sunflower oil
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2 medium to large really ripe bananas
  • 150g blueberries, washed
  • Honey to drizzle (optional) 

Equipment:

  • 1 muffin tin
  • 12 muffin cases or 8 tulip muffin cases
  • Sieve
  • Board
  • 2 x mixing bowls – or 1 x mixing bowl and a jug
  • 2 x desert spoons
  • Wire cooling rack

Ingredients:

  • For the pizza sauce
    • 1tbsp vegetable oil
    • 1 small onion, chopped
    • 1 garlic clove, crushed
    • 1 tbsp dried mixed herbs
    • 1tbsp tomato puree
    • 400g  tin chopped tomatoes
    • Pinch of sugar
  • For the Scone base
    • 175g self raising flour
    • 1/2tsp baking powder
    • 50g margarine
    • 50g Cheddar cheese, grated*
    • 5-6tbsp semi-skimmed milk*
    • Salt and pepper
  • For the topping
    • 100g sprouting broccoli florets, trimmed
    • 100g mushrooms, halved or sliced
    • 1/2 small red or yellow  pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced
    • A few black olives
    • 50g Cheddar cheese, grated*
    • Black pepper

If you want to go vegan: Replace the Cheddar cheese with a plant based cheese and replace the milk with almond milk.

Protecting Our Common Home: Join St John’s on Magna Carta Day!

  • Description: This Magna Carta Day, St John’s Church will be out on the High Street, celebrating our community and sharing our passion for Caring for Creation. As we look toward a more sustainable future, we invite you to stop by our stall and make your voice—and your actions—count. Make your promise: Add a leaf to “The LoveEgham Pledge Tree” by writing down one practical, environmental change you want to make for our local area.

Take it a step further: We will also be sharing information and promoting The People’s Emergency Briefing, happening on 20th June at 4:00 PM. Come find us on the High Street, share your ideas, and let’s work together to look after the beautiful world we’ve been given!

Chertsey Meads Balsam Bash

National Emergency Briefing – the film

  • Description: Join us for a screening of the People’s Emergency Briefing - an eye-opening film bringing together nine leading UK scientists and experts with the latest evidence and why it matters for things like: Extreme weather, Food security, Health, Cost of living

    The film is based on the National Emergency Briefing in Westminster (featured by ITV, Channel 4 and The Times) with appearances from Chris Packham, Deborah Meaden, and a range of voices from across the UK.

    This Surrey screening is hosted by St John's Egham church, St John's Eco-Team. After the film there will be a short open discussion about what it means for our community and what we can do locally. We have invited local councillors for this important discussion about our future.

    Seats are free but limited so please book in advance. Bring a friend, neighbour or family member: everyone is welcome. If you can't make this screening check out other screenings that are happening in your area. Or consider putting on your own screening at your local community centre or hall.
