Disability Confident Employer

Disability Confident logo

The Council is aiming to become a Disability Confident Employer and promote inclusivity through the recruitment and selection process.

Whether an employee has become disabled during their working life, or hiring new talent, the Council recognise that being Disability Confident can help employees fulfil their potential and contribute fully to RBC’s success, helping to positively change attitudes, behaviours and cultures.

The Council’s commitments are to provide

  • an inclusive and accessible recruitment process that draws from the widest possible pool of talent
  • reasonable adjustments to existing employees and candidates.
  • work experience placements to students and members of the community.
  • apprenticeships to individuals aged 16 and over, combining practical training with study.

Reasonable adjustments passport

Whether you undertake a work experience placement, attend an interview or are an employee, the Council is committed to ensuring that each person feels that they can thrive. It is important to the Council that everyone is included, supported and able to work at their best.

To enable this, the Council have created two reasonable adjustment passports.

Interview

The Runnymede Borough Council recruitment process may include various stages and activities – for example, application forms, online tests, competency-based exercises and interviews. These assess whether you meet the requirements of a job or job level.  If due to a disability or health condition you need something altering to help you perform at your best, completing a Reasonable Adjustment Passport – Interview’ will help you communicate this with the Human Resources team. As appropriate the team will discuss the proposed adjustments with the recruiting manager and confirm with you what adjustments can be put in place.

Some examples of adjustments that have been offered to candidates include

  • changing the time, location or format of interviews
  • providing interview questions in written format
  • additional time in timed tests, interviews or other assessment activities
  • a parking space located close to the building

This is not an exhaustive list, and we will consider any adjustments that you might need.

Work placement/employment

The ‘Reasonable Adjustments Passport – Employment’ is designed as a talking tool for employees to have positive and constructive conversations with their line managers about adjustments that they might need in the workplace. The passport is designed to ensure continuity of adjustments across placements and different roles an individual may hold over time in the organisation.

It removes the need to have repeated disability assessments and enables adjustments to be recorded. The individual undertaking a work placement or employee is in full control of the information they wish to share.

A review of the passport should happen annually for employees, or more frequently or if there are changes to the employee’s role or health. This review will ensure that the adjustments are still appropriate and effective in eliminating workplace barriers.
