Knowledge tests

The knowledge tests are written assessment for which you will need a good knowledge of the Runnymede borough and / or the requirements and conditions which apply to the type of licence you want.

The test will be held once a month at the Civic Centre please ensure you arrive in plenty of time as no extra time will be given, you are required to bring your DVLA driving licence or passport with you.

This fee must be paid on booking the test, payments are not accepted on the day of the test. (Please note that if you cancel your knowledge test less than 48 hours before the appointment, no refund will be given.

At the Test

Private hire applicants have one hour to complete parts 1, 2 and 3 of the test, Hackney Carriage have 2 Hours to complete all four parts.

  • Pens & answer sheets are provided.
  • Items NOT permitted to be used during the Test: mobile phones, written notes, maps, satellite navigation systems, etc.
  • Any form of cheating or attempts to photograph the papers will result in your paper being void and you will not be permitted to sit the test again.
  • Each question has only ONE correct answer
  • Each part must be completed successfully, if you pass one part of the test and fail any of the other part you will only have to retake the parts you have failed.
  • If the examiner cannot read an answer, it will not receive a mark. There are three parts to the test as follows.
  • You will be informed of your result in writing within seven working days.

Section one is multiple choice; the Test pass mark is 20 out of 25 for PH or HC

This will include a numeracy test. Test pass mark 5 out of 5.

You will be tested on your knowledge of 60 locations in Runnymede and will be expected to be able to name the exact road name and town.

We have introduced a standard set of locations which all driver applicants should use as a study aid to assist them in gaining knowledge of the area.

Knowledge of these locations is essential if you want to become a driver in Runnymede, the pass mark is 45 out of 60.

We have a number of taxi ranks in Runnymede, for this part of the test you will be asked to write three routes from the ranks located at Egham, Chertsey and Addlestone railway stations. The route will be to a named location in the borough. Include all road names, direction of turns at junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights.

Route Knowledge Test Study Guide

There are 9 short routes on the route knowledge test which you have the opportunity to learn.

The pass mark is 6 correct answers out of 9.

The most direct route must be used and must include. Road names.

Changes of road name. Direction of turn at junctions.

The number of the exit taken at a roundabout. Traffic lights and direction taken.

Abbreviations may be used, see example below.

  • Addlestone Rail Station to Top Golf, New Haw
  • From station car park TL (turn left) into Victory Park Road. TR (turn right) into Station Road.
  • 1st RAB (roundabout) 1st exit into Garfield Road. 1st RAB 2nd exit into Crockford Park Rd.
  • ATS (automatic traffic signal) TL into New Haw Rd TR into Moated Farm Drive for Top Golf.
