Landscape, Natural Assets and Biodiversity
Outside of its urban areas, the Runnymede area can be defined by four landscape types: river floodplain, and river valley mainly to the east; and settled and wooded sandy farmland, and sandy woodland mainly to the west.
Runnymede contains several natural and designated assets - including Sites of Special Scientific and Nature Conservation Interest, Local Nature Reserves, Ancient Woodland and other priority habitats and species. Many of these have been identified as Areas of Particular Importance for Biodiversity or Areas that Could Become of Importance for Biodiversity within the Surrey Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS). This includes Runnymede Meadows, Windsor Great Park and the floodplains of the Rivers Wey and Thames, amongst others.
There are numerous areas of ancient woodland, predominantly in the west of the Borough, as well as priority habitat comprised mostly of deciduous woodland and lowland meadows.
