Chertsey Museum marked its 60th birthday on 27 November, celebrating six decades of preserving and sharing the stories of Runnymede.

When the museum first opened to the public in 1965, it displayed a remarkable early collection of local history items, photographs, paintings, clocks, furniture, and a large collection of Mycenaean, Cypriot, Italian and Greek pots. These first displays set the foundations for what would become one of Surrey’s most cherished heritage spaces.

Growing collections over six decades

Since 1965, the museum’s collections have expanded significantly. Today, Chertsey Museum holds a rich and diverse range of objects exploring the history of the Runnymede area. These include:

  • Important archaeological finds and material relating to Chertsey Abbey
  • Fine and decorative art
  • Social history items documenting everyday life across the Borough
  • A large archive of historic documents and photographs
  • And the nationally significant Olive Matthews Collection of Dress and Textiles, spanning more than 400 years of fashion

Together, these collections help tell the story of the Borough’s people, places and heritage, making the museum an invaluable cultural resource for residents, schools and visitors.

A museum shaped by its community

The museum’s success over the past 60 years has been driven by the support of local residents, volunteers, schools and partners who help bring the collection to life. Popular exhibitions, learning sessions, craft activities and community projects—such as the recent St Peter’s Hospital Untold wellbeing exhibition—ensure the museum remains a vibrant and welcoming space for all ages.

Looking ahead

As Chertsey Museum celebrates its 60th birthday, its vision remains focused on engagement, creativity and showcasing the unique heritage of Runnymede. Visitors can look forward to new exhibitions, expanded learning opportunities, and more hands-on activities throughout the anniversary year and beyond.
