Licensing fees and charges

Our licensing fees and charges for applications have been at the current level since the introduction of the Licensing Act in 2003. They are set in statute and the same fees apply country-wide.

Minor Variations to premises licences and club premises certificates as per the 2009 Legislative reform order

There is an exemption from fees for certain types of premises where the only activity carried out at the premises is regulated entertainment between the hours of 8am and 11pm.

The Licensing Act 2003 sets out what activities are included when providing regulated entertainment.

The descriptions of entertainment activities licensable under the 2003 act are:

  • a performance of a play
  • an exhibition of a film
  • an indoor sporting event
  • a boxing or wrestling entertainment
  • a performance of live music
  • any playing of recorded music
  • a performance of dance
  • and entertainment of a similar description to a performance of live music, any playing of recorded music or a performance of dance

Where there is only regulated entertainment the  following are exempted from paying the application fee and annual fees for Premises Licences, Club Premises Certificates or variation of those licences or certificates.

  • Church halls, chapel halls or other premises of a similar nature
  • village halls, parish or community halls or premises or a similar nature
  • school or college premises which are used for the entertainment by the school or college on behalf of the school

Please note that if there are sale of alcohol in any form you will require a premises licence

Where the number of people that can be admitted to the licensed premises exceeds 5000, additional fees on the sliding scale set out below will be applicable.  This applies to all Premises Licences, regardless of whether that licence is granted for a specific period or not.
