Grant criteria

Guildford Street Chertsey

The grant scheme is open to all businesses located within the Chertsey Conservation Area Businesses located on Guildford Street will be prioritised, but the programme is also open to applications from businesses on Windsor Street and London Road.

Landlords and tenants can apply, although tenants must receive the consent of landlords and landlords must receive the consent of tenants for the work (except where the property is vacant) before submitting an application. We will require a letter of proo that consent has been provided by relevant parties for the work to be undertaken.

We will prioritise works directly related to shopfront improvements. This includes

  • New shopfronts
  • Repairs, restorations, painting or maintenance to existing shopfronts
  • Reinstatement of original architectural features
  • Replacement of external security shutters with internal open grille-style shutters
  • Replacements to signage (and/or lighting) that is more in keeping with the area
  • Awning, Stall riser, pilaster
  • Works to building frontages above shopfront:
  • Repairs to façade render / pointing
  • Repairs to windows/replacement windows

Shop fronts

The scheme will consider any improvement which is deemed to improve the general look and feel of the building and is sympathetic to the surrounding area.

We will also consider other material improvements to building frontages including

  • Planters/window boxes
  • Painting
  • Outdoor tables and seating (subject to pavement license applications)
  • Works that have already taken place before the offer of a grant has been made
  • Internal repairs or alterations (except the installation of interior shutters when replacing external shutters)
  • Installation of external security shutters

Please note that professional fees including design work, consultants’ fees, or fees associated with obtaining planning permission will not be reimbursed as the grant scheme is solely for physical improvements.

Shop front grant - expression of interest

Grants of up to £20,000 are available to Chertsey businesses who want to smarten up their frontages, The money can pay for new shop fronts, repairs, restoration work and new signage intended to be more in keeping with the heritage of the area
