This week, Esso has started enabling works for installation of its replacement Southampton to London pipeline which runs through parts of the Borough.
Residents are likely to notice earth works taking place in the area of Mead Lane near the car park and marina, at the west side of Chertsey Meads, around The River Bourne in this area and on the fields behind Chertsey High School.
The pipeline is being built to replace 90km of underground piping which currently transports the equivalent of around 100 trucks of aviation fuel a day between Fawley Refinery and Hounslow.
The pipeline is not a Council project, but our staff are kept informed of its progress and given the quicker than expected start, this news story has been published to keep local people informed.
Although the works have suddenly appeared, they were approved as part of the Development Consent Order signed off by Government which allowed the whole pipeline to be built and are a few weeks ahead of the published timetable.
The work is being carried out earlier than planned to reduce risk of delays to the start of installation and to reduce impacts to Abbey Rangers. It includes the two trenchless crossings under the Chertsey Road A317 and the River Bourne.
A construction compound is being set up and topsoil is being removed from the vehicle access route. A temporary bridge over the River Bourne will be installed which requires foundation works to support it. Some vegetation removal will also be taking place. The work is expected to take three weeks and there will be a crane onsite. Public Rights of Way will remain open.
Esso will be writing to households and businesses in the local area this week to notify them of bridge installation and direct them to our website for more information.
The main open cut installation works across Chertsey Meads are due to start in June.
