Runnymede Borough Council is deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Cllr Mark Maddox, who passed away yesterday morning, Tuesday 1 March 2022.

Cllr Maddox was first elected to his New Haw seat in 2012, having lived in the area for more than 20 years. During his 10 years of service, he has been a valued Councillor, proudly representing both ward and Borough residents. He will be greatly missed.

The Mayor of Runnymede will lead a minute’s silence at tomorrow’s meeting of Full Council, Thursday 3 March 2022, where both Councillors and residents are invited to pay their respects.

Cllr Nick Prescot, Leader of Runnymede Borough Council, said

We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Councillor Maddox’s death. Mark was a brilliant man and highly respected Councillor, who has worked hard to represent residents over the past 10 years.

During his service he worked hard to build relationships with local people and was committed to tackling crime and antisocial behaviour within our local community. His death is a sad loss for Runnymede residents. My thoughts are with Mark’s family at this difficult time.

During his time with the Council, Cllr Maddox has represented local people in several positions. At the time of his sudden death, he was the Vice Chairman of Surrey County Council’s Runnymede Joint Committee, representing Runnymede.

He was also an active member of the Council’s Corporate Management Committee, Planning Committee and Licensing Committee. He also held the position of Chairman of the Service and Digital Transformation Member Working Party.

In addition, since 2017 he had been the Council’s representative on South East Employers and more recently on Surrey County Council Pension Fund.

Councillor Maddox was also the Chairman of the Board and Non-Executive Director of RBC Investments (Surrey) Ltd, the Council’s investment and property development company, owned by the Council.
