What your council tax goes on

Your Council Tax payments are used to fund services provided by Runnymede Borough Council, Surrey County Council and Surrey Police.

Runnymede Borough Council receives less than 10% of your payments and we use this funding to provide local services including

  • collecting household waste and recycling
  • street cleaning
  • day centres for the elderly
  • community transport and meals
  • parks and green spaces
  • CCTV and other measures to keep Runnymede safe

Surrey County Council receives almost 80% of your payments and they use this funding to provide

  • education
  • children’s and adult social care
  • libraries
  • Surrey fire and rescue
  • Trading standards
  • public transport
  • maintenance of public roads

The remainder of your total bill goes to the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Surrey (Surrey Police).

Council tax payments only make up around 11% of Runnymede Borough Council’s total income. The Council owns several private and commercial properties around the southeast of England. The income generated from these properties subsidises the cost of services, meaning Runnymede residents are benefiting from a higher quality of local service than the Council could otherwise afford.

The Council also generates income by working in partnership with neighbouring boroughs. We have a successful partnership with Surrey Heath Borough Council for community services, and our Safer Runnymede operations team handle the CCTV and monitoring services for several of our neighbouring boroughs.
