Runnymede reaches important milestone in preparing new Local Plan

Runnymede Borough Council has reached an important milestone in preparing its next Local Plan, with the publication of its Gateway 1 self-assessment summary.

Published on 30 October, the summary marks the formal start of a 30-month process to prepare a new Local Plan for the Runnymede area. The Government is in the process of publishing transitional arrangements to allow plans to continue alongside Local Government Reorganisation on current borough geographies.

The Local Plan will help shape how the area develops in the future, including where new homes, employment opportunities and infrastructure could be provided, alongside policies to protect the environment and support local communities.

The Council has recently completed its first public consultation, which invited residents, stakeholders, businesses and community organisations to share their views on the issues the new plan should address.

Feedback is now being reviewed and will help inform the next stages of the plan’s development.

Co-Leader of the Council, Councillor Don Whyte, said:

“Reaching this milestone is an important step towards preparing a new Local Plan for Runnymede.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took part in our recent consultation and attended our events. Your feedback will help us understand what matters most to local communities as we develop the plan.

“We’re now reviewing the responses and hope to publish a summary of what people told us, and how we’re taking their views into account, by the end of the year.”

Further opportunities for residents and businesses to have their say are planned as work progresses, including a consultation on the emerging vision and strategy in summer 2027.
