Runnymede Borough Council has seized an HGV after an investigation into repeated fly-tipping incidents throughout the borough.
Following reports from the public and council waste teams of ongoing fly tipping in the area, council staff monitored an emerging hotspot and captured the vehicle in the act. Working with Surrey Police the vehicle was located, stopped and seized in the days that followed.
The dumped material was treated waste, which is subject to landfill tax.
The seized vehicle was on false numberplates and went unclaimed for 15 working days and will be sold at auction in due course.
Runnymede Borough Council Co-Leader Cllr Don Whyte said:
This is a brilliant result in tackling the scourge of fly-tipping, which causes no end of trouble for residents and our environment.
Residents disposing of waste want to do the right thing, but it’s well-known that organised criminals will falsely claim to property owners that they are a licensed waste disposal firm. In reality they’ll just take your money and dump the waste illegally.
I urge residents to always ask for evidence that a waste firm is legitimate, before engaging them.
