Statement from Runnymede Borough Council

Runnymede Borough Council is shocked and saddened by the tragic events which occurred in Chertsey on 25 June 2026, and our thoughts are with those affected by this loss, and with the wider community.

The Council is committed to supporting its residents at this difficult time and is working alongside partners to support the work of Surrey Police.

Surrey Police have implemented additional policing in Chertsey and officers are engaging directly with residents, businesses, and local partners to listen to concerns, provide safety advice and reassurance, and ensure information is shared quickly and effectively.  In addition to engaging directly with police officers, residents are encouraged to report any concerns or information to Surrey Police as follows:

  • In an emergency or if a crime is in progress: call 999
  • For non-emergency reporting: Call 101 or report online via the Surrey Police website
  • To submit CCTV, dashcam footage or digital evidence can be uploaded securely through Surrey Police’s online reporting.
  • To report anonymously: Contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

The Council is aware of online speculation that this incident is connected to asylum seeker accommodation or HMOs (Houses of Multiple Occupation) which is not the case.

The Council will continue to work with Surrey Police over the coming days and again urge residents to raise any concerns directly with officers of Surrey Police or via the channels set out above.
