Runnymede drivers using Council-owned off-street carparks are being urged to ensure their parking permits and blue badges are clearly displayed, following a new camera-based parking enforcement system
The new system is being introduced at Memorial Gardens in Virginia Water, Woodlands in Chertsey, Chertsey Library and Waspe Farm, Egham.
The new system uses number-plate recognition to automatically identify which vehicles enter the carpark, have paid for a parking session and are displaying a ticket or have paid by RingGo. Those who don’t pay at the kiosk or use RingGo are likely to receive a penalty charge notice.
Parking permits and Blue Badges are not recognised electronically and must be physically displayed. The system captures vehicle registration numbers, and no automatic decision is made on whether a vehicle is exempt.
Drivers are also being asked to take care when entering their number plate under the new system, to ensure they don’t mix up numerals and characters – such as O vs. 0, or S vs. 5. The number plate recognition system can only match a registration with one that has been correctly entered, or you have obtained a physical ticket to display.
The council has reached agreement with those local schools where the nearby carpark is used for short-term drop-off and pickup at specific times of day but parents must display their parking permits.
Parking charges themselves will not change, and the revenue will continue to be reinvested in maintaining the borough’s parking facilities, to ensure they are well-maintained.
If drivers have any problems with the new system, they can contact Parking Services on 01932 838383: parking@runnymede.gov.uk.
