Over 150 residents got moving this summer as Runnymede Borough Council’s free “Fitness in the Park” sessions proved to be a big hit.
The exercise programme, which began in May to help residents learn how to use the free gym equipment in Victory Park, Addlestone, and grew into a summer-long calendar of outdoor fitness classes extended to Gogmore Farm Park, in Chertsey.
Sessions included bootcamps, dance, Pilates and Zumba in the Park, bringing families, friends, and individuals of all ages together.
Cllr Abby King, Chair of the Community Services Committee, said:
“Fitness in the Park was a fantastic way for residents to enjoy exercise together. We worked with local fitness instructors to provide free taster sessions, and the demand was so strong that we extended the programme over the whole summer. We are thrilled to see so many people taking part, and we hope residents will continue with some of the classes they tried.”
The final session closed the series with a free Zumba class. Many residents said they valued the chance to try something new without the pressure of a gym setting. For some it was about fitness, for others it was about meeting new people and enjoying time outdoors.
The council would like to thank Anytime Fitness Addlestone, Physiosam, Dancing Mamas and MYSOULZUMBA for helping make the sessions possible.
The initiative tied directly into the council’s Health and Wellbeing Strategy, showing how simple, free opportunities can make a lasting impact on community health.
Stay tuned for next year’s events!
