People living across Surrey are being urged to take part in a landmark government consultation that will result in the number of councils in the county being reduced from 12 to either two or three.
Nine local councils in Surrey including Runnymede have come together to support the three-council future, whilst three other councils are supporting the two council arrangement.
This week the leaders of the councils which support the three council future have come together to create a short film explaining the benefits.
The consultation being run by the Government is open to all residents, businesses, voluntary groups, and local organisations - and is the only opportunity for the public to comment on these proposals.
This change marks the most significant change to local government in the county in over 50 years, giving residents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape how decisions are made, services are delivered, and communities are represented.
The councils backing the three council model believe that solution will mean:
- Local voices are heard, with decisions made closer to communities
- Better services that are efficient, responsive and cost-effective
- More support for the vulnerable
- Proud local identity, protecting what makes each area unique
- Smarter spending with a focus on value for money
The consultation will be open until Tuesday, August 5, 2025. Have your say
