Runnymede Borough Council is saddened to report the death of Councillor John Furey.
Cllr Furey served on Runnymede Borough Council for many years, representing the Addlestone South Ward. He was also a member of Surrey County Council, where he held several Cabinet roles, including as Cabinet Member for Transport and Environment.
At Runnymede, Cllr Furey was known for his dedication to public service, his detailed knowledge of infrastructure issues, and his long-standing commitment to residents.
In a statement, the Co-Leaders of Runnymede Borough Council said:
“We are deeply saddened to learn of John Furey’s passing. John was a long-serving and committed public servant whose contributions were felt across both Runnymede and Surrey.
He brought a calm and considered voice to Council business, always advocating strongly on behalf of his community. His knowledge, experience and generosity of time will be greatly missed.”
Cllr Peter Snow, Leader of the Conservative Group in Runnymede, said:
“The news that John Furey has died today was difficult for many of us to comprehend, John was an Addlestone Councillor for some twenty years and to the Runnymede Conservatives it appeared he would go on indefinitely. In reality we all knew he was having difficulty with his health, but he never let that get in the way of his responsibilities to Addlestone, Runnymede or Surrey.
He will be missed by many and will remain one of stalwart councillors when we look back at the history of Runnymede Borough Council.
As the leader of the Runnymede Conservatives and the Council, John only knew one way to lead and that was from the front
Rest in peace my friend and mentor.”
A minute’s silence will be held at the next meeting of Full Council in tribute.
