Free help to get back into work

Room for work
Room for Work is a programme to help people learn employment skills.

A free career development programme for residents has been re-launched by Runnymede Borough Council.

Starting on 19 September, employment specialists Room for Work will be running a 12-session career development course in Egham.

Targeted at those aged 45 or over, the course is for people who may be struggling to get back into work. Participants do not have to be unemployed to take part – they may want to develop their career or are looking to start something new.

The course helps participants find the job which they want to do. It does this by firstly helping individuals to understand their skills - what they are good at and what they want to do.  And then equipping attendees with important job search techniques. This includes networking, developing social media skills, improving a CV, and practising competency-based interviews. All of this is delivered in a friendly and local environment.

This will be the second time we have has run this course. The first ran in April, where eight Runnymede residents took part. We are pleased to say that at least two of them have already gone on to secure employment, and another has been offered a job.

Room for Work continues to support these participants. We ask for feedback and progress for up 6 months, ensuring we keep improving how we work with and help residents who are looking to get back into employment.

Here are some comments from participants on the first course in Egham:

"Thanks again for running this extremely helpful, inclusive and supportive course."

"I am happy to tell you that I started a permanent job in April where I am still very happy. The course had lots of useful tips and the mentors were helpful. I will definitely recommend the course to anyone out of work and will keep an eye on your socials to see what you are doing."

"I also really appreciated the guidance shared outside the core sessions, and for the individual 1:1 advice shared by you all."

The support is funded by the Government’s Shared Prosperity Fund and is free to people who live in Runnymede. We secured £1million from the fund in 2022 which has supported a number of community, employment and business related initiatives.
