The Council signs new Armed Forces Covenant

Signing the covenant

Runnymede Borough Council are proud to have reaffirmed our commitment to being a forces friendly employer by re-signing the Armed Forces Covenant with an enhanced pledge.

The Covenant was signed on 3 January 2024 by the Leader of the Council, Cllr Tom Gracey and Colonel Patrick Crowley MBE DL on behalf of the Ministry of Defence

The Armed Forces Covenant is a voluntary statement of mutual support between our community and the Armed Forces locally.  The Council first signed the Covenant in November 2013, and has now updated its Covenant to reflect a number of steps it has taken and commitment to further pledges including:

  • Additional leave for employees who are members of the Reserve Force
  • Support for employees who are volunteer leaders in military cadet organisations
  • Commitment to working with the Career Transition Partnership, the official provider of Armed Forces resettlement, and
  • Advocate for the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme by encouraging suppliers and potential suppliers to engage in the scheme

Cllr Tom Gracey, Leader of the Council said

I am delighted to sign the Armed Forces Covenant on behalf of Runnymede Borough Council. As an employer we are committed to supporting the Armed Forces community working and residing in Surrey.  We are passionate about building an inclusive and diverse workforce, welcoming candidates from a variety of backgrounds, skills and abilities.

As a local authority we are committed to ensuring that members of the military and the broader military family are not disadvantaged through their service and can access the full range of the Council’s services.

Andrew Pritchard, CEO, Runnymede Borough Council, said:

As a Serving Colonel in the Reserve Army, I am very grateful to the support Runnymede Borough Council provide to myself as a reservist and also all of our staff who have connections within the Armed Forces.

Unfortunately veterans and those with military commitments can often face challenges or disadvantages in the workplace, so I strongly encourage all companies to consider being a forces friendly employer.

Runnymede has received its silver accreditation in 2021 under the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme and is hoping to achieve gold status in 2024. Learn more about our Armed Forces Covenant
