Local Plan
The Runnymede 2030 Local Plan was adopted in July 2020 and is supporting the delivery of significant new development in the Borough along with supporting local infrastructure.
This includes the delivery of approximately 7,500 new homes in the Borough, of which 30 per cent are expected to be affordable homes. A total of 1,700 of these new homes are to be delivered at a new Garden Village at Longcross which is intended to be an exemplar form of development, epitomising good practice in the delivery of sustainable new communities and their supporting infrastructure.
The Local Plan also provides a supportive policy environment for sustainable economic growth. In the last couple of years for example, this has facilitated the granting of permission for significant new industrial, storage and distribution floorspace in the southern half of the borough. A £42 million investment in the A320 corridor will also support growth, comprises various road, pavement, public transport and cycle facility improvements to junctions and the link roads along the A320 between Ottershaw and Chertsey.
The Council is in the process of updating its Local Plan, with a replacement plan expected to be adopted in Summer 2027. Currently in the evidence gathering stage, the Council is committed to responding positively and proactively to national planning policy by continuing to provide new homes, commercial development and supporting infrastructure in a sustainable manner up to 2043. Maximising opportunities to support the Borough’s transition to net zero by 2050 and promoting the conservation and enhancement of the Borough’s natural environment are expected to be important elements of the Local Plan strategy.
