Local Cycling & Walking Infrastructure Plans (LCWIP)
Working with Surrey County Council we are one of the first boroughs to take forward a wide cycling and walking plan which will radically change the way residents can move across the area without getting in cars. A phased approach to development and delivery is proposed with the current phase of work (Stage 2) being progressed to complete the feasibility design for priority routes identified within the stage 1 LCWIP plan. This second phase of work commenced in October 2023. Currently the completion of this feasibility stage is expected by end of the 2025 calendar year.
Electric Vehicle Strategy
The Council’s Electric Vehicle (EV) Strategy sets out the Council’s approach to support the transition from petrol and diesel vehicles to EV, which brings benefits through lowering carbon emissions, reducing road transport noise, and reducing air pollution.
Heathrow
The Council is a member of the Heathrow Strategic Planning Group, which ensures that action is co-ordinated at a regional level and that maximum leverage is gained with management there and the Government. We have called for an Ultra-Low Emissions Zone around the airport, measures to minimise private travel to the airport, minimisation of construction traffic, and noise reduction. We have also joined forces on Heathrow decarbonisation research
Green Travel Strategy
The Green Travel Strategy seeks to provide a strategic direction for the Council’s actions to reduce emissions associated with staff commuting and business travel. The vision of the Strategy is to encourage, support, and enable all employees and elected members of the Council to use the most sustainable form of travel, where reasonably practical, for every journey. The Strategy has been heavily directed by the outcomes of two internal surveys, summarised in detail within the Strategy, which provide a strong evidence-base for the actions proposed in the Strategy Action Plan.
In summary, at the heart of the Strategy are the following objectives:
- To ensure that the perspectives of RBC employees and elected members are central to its development, implementation, and ongoing evaluation.
- To promote sustainable transport choices, including a shift to more frequent active travel, public transport, and a reduced dependence on single-occupancy car travel.
- To implement the required facilities and incentives to provide employees and elected members with the capability and opportunity to make more sustainable decisions.
- To embed a fuller understanding and use of sustainable travel across the organisation aligned to the sustainable travel hierarchy.
