What’s happening & why it matters

What is being done?

There is a significant quantity of action being taken at all levels of societies to tackle climate change and aiming to reduce emissions whilst delivering co-benefits of action such as improved physical and mental wellbeing, reduced costs, and a stronger sense of community.

In 2015, the Paris Agreement was signed by 196 parties which sets out a global action plan to avoid dangerous climate change.

All signing parties agreed to the long-term goal of keeping the increase in global average temperature well below 2C above pre-industrial levels and aim to limit any increase to 1.5C.

The UK was among these parties and was the first country to introduce a legally binding target to reduce greenhouse gas through the Climate Change Act (2008), which was amended in 2019 to achieve net zero emissions across the UK by 2050. The 2008 Act also established the Committee on Climate Change (CCC), an independent body to provide evidence-based advice to the UK Government and Parliament on carbon budgets.

In Runnymede, we have taken many actions to show our commitment to reducing emissions, improving sustainability, and enhancing nature in the borough. From switching to hydrogenated vegetable oil (HVO) to power our vehicle fleet, to introducing a new plan for managing our meadows, you can find out about everything we’re doing on our ‘Council policy on climate & nature’ pages.
