Rent a garage

Garage alterations

Licence holders considering making any changes or undertaking repairs to their garage must firstly inform us to ensure the proposals are acceptable to the council, You need to obtain written consent before any changes are made.

This is essential to ensure that any technical issues concerning the structure of the garage and that all Health and Safety matters can be considered. For example the walls and roofing may contain asbestos, which is safe if not disturbed, but can cause damage or substantial risk if not managed and dealt with properly.

You might also have considered the possibility of running an electrical supply to have a light in the garage. You must also get our permission for these types of changes as such works must be carried out by a qualified electrician and we will need to see the relevant safety certificates for the installation.  This type of work could also cause damage to other garages or the ground surrounding the garage so we need to be aware and provide our consent.

The licence agreement confirms that the garage is let for the storage of a motor vehicle and not other purposes, but if you are considering making any changes or undertaking repairs to the garage please remember that the structure of the property belongs to Runnymede Borough Council, and if any works are planned you must firstly inform the Council to ensure your proposals are acceptable and obtain our written consent before any changes are made.

The Council must assess any proposals you may have, to ensure you are aware and if appropriate advised, of any technical issues concerning the structure of the garage, so that all Health and Safety matters can be considered. For example the walls and roofing may contain asbestos, which is safe if not disturbed, but can cause damage or substantial risk if not managed and dealt with properly.

You might also have considered the possibility of running an electrical supply to have a light in the garage. You must also get our permission for these types of changes as such works must be carried out by a qualified electrician, and the Council must be satisfied that works are carried out by an approved contractor. This type of work could also cause damage to other garages or the ground surrounding the garage so we need to be aware and provide our consent.

Prior to carrying out any work or improvements you MUST contact the Housing Maintenance Department on 01932 838383 and seek the necessary permission to start proposed works. You will be asked to provide a full description of the works proposed, including drawings and illustrations where necessary, showing any areas of the garage where the structure, ceilings or flooring will be subject to disturbance and alteration. You will then receive from one of our technical officer's guidance and advice on your proposals, and when we are satisfied that your proposed works are safe and satisfactory, you will be issued with a letter of authority. We may also decide to inspect the garage after the works are complete.

Please also note you must not replace your garage door without permission, again you will need to seek written consent from us as outlined above.

You should report any maintenance or technical concerns regarding your garage or garage block to the Housing Maintenance team.
