Preventing condensation

How to tackle problems caused by condensation dampness.

Condensation can be reduced by increasing the amount of warm dry air circulating.

  • Removing condensation or water collections on surfaces daily will impede mould growth.
  • Allow space for air to circulate between furniture and external walls.
  • Use thermostats to heat evenly throughout the day rather than small bursts of heat.

In the bathroom

  • Put cold water into the bath first to prevent steam.
  • Only keep the shower on for as long as you need.
  • Shut the bathroom door and/or open an external window or use extractor fan.

In the kitchen

  • Put lids on saucepans when cooking.
  • Open windows when cooking and/or use an extractor fan.

  • Try to dry clothes outside or use a tumble drier with an outside vent.
  •  Avoid overfilling wardrobes as this leaves little space for air to circulate.
