Energy in transport and travel

Information on how to improve personal and business fuel economy.

The transport sector (including land, air and sea vehicles) accounts for 36% of all energy used in the UK, with fossil fuels being the dominant source of energy. Personal transport accounts for a major slice of this, although technological advances and environmental legislation have recently improved emissions and car fuel economy.

If you would like advice on saving your own fuel costs, The Energy Saving Trust Travel Energy Check can give you impartial advice to show you how to get the most out of your car.

For small and medium businesses or if your organisation has a fleet of vehicles under 3.5 tonnes, Energy Saving Trust can offer a free fleet health check. This can identify ways to reduce fuel costs and carbon emissions.

Company Travel Plans may be required under planning legislation as a result of the anticipated transport impacts of a business on the surrounding community.  A Company Travel Plan should try to influence travel behaviour predominantly by outlining alternatives to 'single occupancy vehicles', reducing the need to travel, and overall concentrate on reducing the environmental impact of travel. The Government's Department for Transport works with agencies and partners to support the transport network that helps the UK's businesses and gets people and goods travelling around the country.

Further advice is available in Good Practice Guidelines: Guidance on Transport Assessment.

You can register with Sustainable Routes and realise the benefits of cutting down your business travel. If you regularly commute to your workplace by car you could sign up to Surrey Car Share to share your journey. It's a completely free service and personal details are not shared with other users unless you want to contact them. It is an informal agreement between two individuals to occasionally or regularly travel together by car which will reduce fuel costs, congestion and pollution.

Travel Line is an interactive planner which can produce the most effective travel plan for your individual needs.
