The Yellow Bus Service

The service is provided by us in conjunction with the Runnymede Business Partnership, whose members include local businesses, Chambers of Commerce, schools, colleges and Surrey Police.

Parked Yellow Bus

The Yellow School Bus service:

  • picks up students close to their homes
  • drops them off at their school on time
  • is safe, convenient and reliable
  • reduces traffic and the risk of road accidents
  • provides flexibility for parents and a real alternative to the hassle of the school run

The service is provided by us in conjunction with the Runnymede Business Partnership, whose members include local businesses, Chambers of Commerce, schools, colleges and Surrey Police.

The Scheme provides a service to four secondary schools in Runnymede; The first dedicated, American-style school bus scheme in the south of England:

  • Fullbrook
  • Magna Carta
  • Salesian
  • Jubilee High

About the service

The American-style buses are specially designed for the safe movement of students and are only used for school transport and educational trips. Each bus:

  • has 60 high-back seats with integral lap belts
  • has the passenger compartment set on a rigid steel chassis, above the point of impact of most accidents
  • protects passengers with an all-steel body and safety cage with roll-over bars is fitted with an environmentally-friendly Euro 3 engine
  • running on low sulphur diesel

There's a guaranteed seat for all students who are registered for the service. No standing is permitted while buses are moving. Buses are dedicated to each participating school, which promotes ownership by the students and prevents conflict between users.

Dedicated bus drivers

The buses are run by First Group plc, one of the UK's largest bus operators. The company aims to provide the same driver on the same bus every day, so students and drivers get to know and trust each other and create a friendly, ordered environment on board.

Bus routes

The bus routes and timings are planned by us in consultation with First Group. They're designed around pick-up points (many of which are existing bus stops) within around 300 metres of students' homes.

The buses drop students either within their school grounds or at the school gates, depending on the school. At present, the buses only operate within the borough of Runnymede.

At school

If your Yellow Bus service means a student arrives before the start of the school day, some schools provide either a supervised breakfast club or rooms for working and waiting. Please check with your child's school for more details. Students attending after-school activities can use later buses where available.

This scheme operates with thanks to our sponsors: Thorpe Park, World of Duty Free and P&G.
