Knowledge tests

The knowledge tests are written assessment for which you will need a good knowledge of the Runnymede borough and / or the requirements and conditions which apply to the type of licence you want. Tests are held once a month at the Civic Centre. Please ensure you arrive in plenty of time as no extra time will be given if you're late. On the day of the test, you are required to bring your DVLA driving licence or passport with you.

Knowledge Test Guidance

The test will be held once a month at the Civic Centre please ensure you arrive in plenty of time as no extra time will be given. There is a fee of £72 for the hackney carriage driver test, £55 for private hire driver or operator. This must be paid on booking the test, payments are not accepted on the day of the test. (please note that if you cancel your knowledge test and wish to take on another date you will not be able to book a future test date as there may be other applicants waiting, you will be placed on a waiting list and informed of the test availability no later than one week prior to the test)

You have one hour to complete parts 1 and 2 of the test and a further half hour to complete part 3 the Hackney Carriage route test, if applicable. On the day of the test you are required to bring your DVLA driving licence or passport with you.

Pens & answer sheets are provided.

Items NOT permitted to be used during the Test: mobile phones, written notes, maps, satellite navigation systems, etc.

Any form of cheating or attempts to photograph the papers will result in your paper being void and you will not be permitted to sit the test again.

You will be informed of your result in writing within seven working days.

Each question has only ONE correct answer

Each part must be completed successfully, if you pass part 3 and fail any of the other part you will only have to retake both parts 1 and 2 again.

It is a written test and you will need a good working knowledge of the Runnymede Borough Council area and/or the relevant requirements and conditions for the licence you are applying for. If the examiner cannot read an answer it will not receive a mark. There are three parts to the test as follows.

Part 1 (All applicants)

Questions on Byelaws, requirements, conditions and fares which are supplied in your taxi pack (multiple choice answers). Pass mark 20 out of 25.

This will also include a numeracy test. Pass mark 5 out of 5.

Please note that if you are going to apply for a private hire operators licence you will only be tested on your knowledge of the private hire operator requirements and conditions.

Part 2 (All driver applicants)

You will be tested on your knowledge of 60 locations in Runnymede and will be expected to be able to name the exact road name and town. 

We have introduced a standard set of locations which all applicants should use as a study aid  to assist them in gaining knowledge of the area. This lists a number of locations in Runnymede. Sixty of these locations make up the test paper and the questions are changed for each test to prevent duplicate test papers being produced, the pass mark is 45/60. Knowledge of all these locations is essential if you want to pass. Please use the study guide to assist you gaining this knowledge, this gives you a list of locations which are included in the test.

Part 3 (Hackney carriage applicants only)

We have four ranks in Runnymede, for this part of the test you will be asked to write three routes from three of these ranks. The ranks are located at Egham, Chertsey, Virginia Water and Addlestone, ( for example you could be asked for three routes from Egham, three from Virginia Water and three from Addlestone ). The route will be to a named location in the borough. Include all road names, direction of turns at junctions, roundabouts and traffic lights. Pass mark 6 out of 9.
