Changing our governance

In order to hold a referendum to change our model of governance from leader and cabinet to elected mayor and cabinet, we would need a certain number of registered voters' signatures on a petition. This figure is known as the verification number.

The Local Authority (Referendums) (Petitions) (England) Regulations 2011

Publication of Verification Number

In accordance with Regulation 4(1) of the above regulations the number that is equal to 5% of the number of local government electors shown in the revised register of electors having effect on the 15 February 2016 is:

2887

This figure will have effect for the purposes of determining the validity of Petitions presented from 1 April 2016 to 31 March 2017.

The number equal to 5% of the local government electors for 2017 will be published within 14 days of the 15 February 2017.  If this number is less than 2887, the new (lower) number will apply from the date it is published  until 31 March 2017.
