New streets and developments

Owners, developers or agents of a new development that creates one or more new roads should contact us as soon as planning permission is granted.

You can apply online to name new streets and developments.

Naming new streets

Your proposed names will be checked against our street names database to ensure that there are no streets with similar names already in the same postcode area. The proposed names will then be forwarded to the Ward Councillors and Historical Societies for consideration. Councillors will consider the name and may approve it or suggest another name. We will forward any suggestions to you. Once both parties are happy, we will officially allocate the street name, however the Ward Councillor will make the final decision.

If your proposed names do not meet our criteria for naming streets we reserve the right to alter them. We will forward our suggestions to you for information and will officially allocate the street name and a postcode from Royal Mail.

Once the name has been approved by Royal Mail, the details will be entered onto their database. We will then write to you to confirm this and also circulate the new address details to a list of essential service providers.

Street nameplates

All costs for the supply and erection of signs for new street nameplates will need to be met by the property developer. All new nameplates should be provided to the Council's specification, detailed with the street name approval confirmation.

Naming developments

If you wish to have your development named, we recommend that you provide us with a list of three names in order of preference for Royal Mail to approve. This will reduce delays in case your preferred choice is not acceptable to Royal Mail.

For an infill development of two or more properties accessed from a private drive, we may decide to give the development a property group name e.g. 1-3 New Court, Existing Street.
