Agencies offering local practical help
Age Concern Runnymede is an independent, registered charity that provides practical support for older people living in Runnymede.
Services offered include:
Community Support Services
Our Community Liaison Officers offer free, independent and confidential 1-1 support and advocacy for older people with a wide variety of problems. Two of our Community Liaison Officers specialise in providing long term support for older people e.g. people with dementia or people who are depressed.
Befriending Service
Our vetted volunteer Befrienders visit older people for a social chat or to accompany them on a local outing or a visit to the shops. Any older person living in Runnymede can apply for this free service which is a partnership project with the Churches in Runnymede, The Diocese of Guildford, Runnymede Association of Voluntary Services and Runnymede Borough Council.
Transport Service
Age Concern Runnymede owns four fully equipped disabled person vehicles. These vehicles are available for hire at very competitive rates to local clubs and community groups that are formally affiliated to Age Concern Runnymede.
Handyman Service
Our handyman can help with small jobs such as: replacing light bulbs, fitting plugs, fixing curtain rails and pelmets, fitting shelves and handles, easing doors and windows, fitting door chains & window locks, replacing small window panes/door glass (subject to inspection) and small plumbing works (subject to inspection). He can also arrange to fit standard grab-rails, handrails and banister rails.
There is a moderate hourly charge for this service plus the cost of any materials required. This is not an emergency service and we do not manage 'larger jobs' such as decorating, electrical wiring or gas repairs. For these jobs we suggest you refer to our Traders Directory or contact Runnymede Borough Council about their Care and Repair Services.
Road to Recovery Service
For older people who are recovering after a hospital stay or from an illness at home we can provide free short term practical help with light domestic work such as bed making, washing up, preparing light snacks, shopping, accompanying to appointments and prescription collections. This service is only available for up to 3 hours per week for 6 weeks. The service does not include personal care or heavy domestic duties e.g. cleaning ovens and cleaning windows.
Home Bathing Service
For a moderate charge older people can enjoy the comfort of a bath in their own home under the discreet or where necessary full supervision of trained staff.
Gardening Service
We can arrange for a vetted gardener to carry out simple tidying of gardens including grass cutting. There is an hourly charge for this service.
Books on Wheels
If you are housebound and unable to visit your local library one of our vetted volunteers can enable you to access library services for books, talking books, CDs and information.
