COUNCIL GETS TOUGH ON GRAFFITI

Runnymede Borough Council has brought in a two man "hit squad" to remove graffiti as soon as possible.

The squad uses high specification washing equipment which is mounted inside a van. This high-pressure equipment is also capable of removing chewing gum from the pavement. Funding was acquired through the Government's Crime Reduction Team, but Runnymede Council will meet the annual operating costs of around £70,000, with a small contribution coming from Surrey County Council.

The Street Care Team now consists of six staff, all of whom have been trained to remove graffiti. They also deal with other tasks such as the installation of litterbins and dog bins, carrying out repairs to bus shelters, and special cleaning operations.
