Biography:
John Furey was elected to Runnymede Borough Council in 2000, representing the Addlestone Bourneside Ward.
He was elected Leader of the Council in 2006, having served for two years as Deputy.
He has chaired the Economic Development Committee, currently sits on the Planning Committee and chairs the Corporate Executive Committee.
John also chairs the Surrey District Leaders Group, Surrey Local Government Association and the "Surrey First Joint Committee" which incorporates County, Surrey Police and District Leaders.
He has recently stood down from the Southeast England Leaders Board Executive, having previously worked with the South East England Development Agency and South East England Regional Agency.
In 2009, John was elected to Surrey County Council, representing the Addlestone Division.
At the county, John sits on the Corporate 'Change and Efficiency' and Transportation Select Committees, with additional Task Group duties, including property and assets, dementia care review and highways.
Previously, John worked for Marks & Spencer at executive level for ten years, prior to buying and running a small group of retail pharmacies. He followed this with a PR and Marketing Company, sourcing and developing new products.
He is particularly concerned with the Government's Debt Reduction approach and its impact on good performing Councils delivering high service levels to the Runnymede communities.
