Planning system changes

From 1 October 2008 the Government will introduce significant changes to what householder development does not require planning permission.  The new system focuses more on the dimensions of the proposed addition or outbuilding e.g. height and floor area (not volume), its position and its proximity to boundaries.  The changes also relate to the paving of front gardens and a new class is introduced relating to chimneys/flues and soil/vent pipes.

At this present time full details of the new householder permitted development rules can be found on the planning portal which has further details of the specific conditions and limits provided for by the Order.  This is available at www.planningportal.gov.uk.   The Portal's guidance provides an initial reference point for householders wanting to know what they can do to their own homes without applying for planning permission.

The Council will also be amending its householder enquiry form and any related householder guidance as soon as possible.

Anyone starting work on any construction work on their own property should contact the Development Control section to ensure that it does not require planning permission.
