Health and safety

What we do


Along with the Health and Safety Executive, Runnymede's Health and Safety team enforce the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 at over 1400 premises in the borough. To do this we perform a number of duties:

  • Conducting Health and Safety inspections
  • Providing advice and guidance
  • Responding to Service requests
  • Accepting and logging statutory reports such as accident reports and adverse lifting equipment notifications
  • Undertaking accident investigations
  • Running campaigns to raise public awareness of important issues

Generally speaking, we are responsible for enforcing Health and Safety law in the following sectors:

  • Offices
  • Retail - including shops, hair dressers, builders merchants
  • Warehouses
  • Leisure activities - including cinema, art galleries, gyms, and swimming pools
  • Hotels, bed and breakfast accommodation
  • Restaurants and pubs
  • Consumer services

Prosecutions register

Information about individuals or organisations who have been prosecuted for health and safety offences by Runnymede Borough Council is compiled into annual reports available from the Health and Safety Executive website. For prosecutions in the current financial year please contact technical@runnymede.gov.uk .
