People with disabilities

If you, or someone who lives with you, needs a room, additional bathroom, kitchen, or extra space in your property, to meet the special needs arising from a disability, you may be entitled to a reduction in your Council Tax bill. This would be subject to meeting the qualifying criteria.

The bill may be reduced to that of a property in the Band immediately below the Band shown on the Valuation List. If your home is in Band A, you may from 1st April 2000 also qualify for relief. The amount of relief is 1/9th of Band D. In order to qualify, your home must be the sole or main residence of the disabled person and must be essential or of major importance to the well being of the person.

These reductions ensure that disabled people do not pay more tax on account of space needed because of a disability.

All applications for Disabled Band Reductions are verified by the Council's Rating Inspector and in addition an annual review of this reduction will be made in writing each year.

If you want further information or wish to apply for this reduction, please phone the Council Tax office on the direct line shown at the top of your Council Tax bill.
