The Association for the Improvement of Runnymede is a not for profit voluntary organisation set up in July 2000 with the assistance of funding from Runnymede Borough Council. Its purpose is to help to obtain funding for environmental projects of all types, primarily through the Government's Landfill Tax Credit Scheme, but also by other means where appropriate. AIR is a company, limited by guarantee. It is managed by a Board, elected by its members.
Under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme grants ranging from a few hundred pounds to £100,000 and more are available for approved projects. Some landfill operators (LOs), such as the Norlands Foundation, will offer 100% of the cost but others will require an independent third party, who cannot be the beneficiary, to pay 10%.
AIR is registered with ENTRUST as an environmental body and its role is to act as a facilitator/administrator in securing grants and ensuring that the necessarily strict guidelines are adhered to.
First time applicants, proposing projects which are considered by the AIR Board to be eligible under the scheme, are charged an initial membership subscription of £25. There is no annual subscription. If successful in obtaining a grant a further contribution of between 5% and 10% of the amount is also sought. In some cases this may be recoverable as part of the grant.
