MAGNA CARTA MEMORIAL

The American Bar Association's memorial, marking the site where King John sealed the Magna Carta is situated at Runnymede Meadow, lies between Egham and Englefield Green. The John F Kennedy Memorial is also situated in the vicinity and the RAF memorial is at the top of the slope.

HOW TO GET THERE

By public transport

You need to find a train to Egham or Staines. The memorial is within walking distance from Egham town centre, but some distance from Staines.

The National Trust page on Runnymede include the bus numbers. You might find it helpful to confirm the public transport details through Traveline: www.traveline.org.uk (+44 870 680 2 608)

There are two ways of reaching Egham station by train from Waterloo. One is direct (via Brentford or Staines) - but takes slightly longer. The other is to catch the stopping train from Waterloo to Woking/Guildford/Portsmouth. You need to change at Weybridge and catch the (only) train from Platform 3, which stops at Addlestone, Chertsey, Egham, Virginia Water & Staines. It is a half-hourly service.

Get off the train at Egham and walk towards the town centre. Runnymede Meadow is about 1 mile from the station. The route is not signposted at present (although we hope it may be by next year!). It may be easiest to get a taxi to the Magna Carta tea room (privately owned business) from which it is a short walk across a field and up a slope to the memorial.

If you're keen walkers:

Runnymede Meadow

Turn right out of Egham station, along Station Road to the traffic lights.

Turn left at the lights and follow the road all the way round to a roundabout with the A30 (you will pass Strodes College on your right and the Youth and Community Centre on your left).

Turn right at the roundabout, along the A30.

Cross the A30 just after the Maranello garage.

You can then turn left up Coopers' Hill Lane which takes you to the top of Runnymede Meadow, from which you need to take a footpath down towards the Windsor Road, passing the memorial on your left, or you can proceed along the by-pass and take one of the footpaths across the meadow. Depending on the weather, the paths across the Meadow could be quite wet!

The Magna Carta Tea Rooms is on the A308 (Windsor Road).
