Biography: Hugh Meares became a Runnymede Borough Councillor for Englefield Green in 2000 and sat on the Executive Committee under the Interim Arrangements which were discarded in 2001 when Runnymede returned to a service based committee structure. He sat on the Surrey County Council Health Select Committee 2002-2006 where he was responsible for the scrutiny of the finances of the Strategic Health Authority and the local health trusts. His interests and concerns include the effect of development on the Borough and its long term sustainability in terms of health and other infrastructure. He believes in local government at a very local level and is concerned at the current pressures towards consolidating Borough size units (which people can naturally relate to) into much larger areas - which he thinks will weaken the links between local voters and local administration.
