In Britain, we use landfill to dispose of our waste. Landfill sites take up a lot of space, space we are running out of.
Waste that goes to landfill can release harmful greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, that trap the sun's heat in our atmosphere, and this can add to global warming and climate change.
Climate change could lead to extinction of many of our animal and plant species, which is why it is important to try to reduce our use of products that create greenhouse gases.
One of the ways to reduce green house gases is to reduce, reuse and recycle in order to prevent waste going to landfill, and the following is how you and your family can help:
It takes more energy to make products from raw materials than it does by using recycled materials, so do your bit and recycle, recycle, recycle!
Reduce the amount of waste you generate by avoiding over-packaged products, and re-use items where possible, such as water bottles.
Make use of your local recycling bring sites, but avoid making special recycling car journeys.
