Community Waste Prevention Programme The Grant Funds

The Surrey Community Waste Prevention Programme has been set up in recognition of the vital and valued role the community and voluntary sector plays in waste prevention, reuse and recycling. The aim of the programme is to help the community and voluntary sector develop their capacity in delivering waste reduction projects. And thus contribute to long term change in our attitudes so that waste can be viewed as a resource.

It is made up of two funding streams:

The Grant Fund

This is designed to assist existing groups already engaged in waste prevention, reuse or recycling activities to further develop their capacity. It will fund up to 80% of the total costs of a project up to a maximum of £15,000 (minimum of 20% match funding is required) per organisation.

The Small Grants Fund

This is designed for the encouragement and capacity building of new groups and initiatives starting out in waste reduction, reuse or recycling activities.

Applications are welcome from any community group, schools and other similar groups as well as from individual members of the Surrey public. This fund is open to bids of up to a maximum of £2,000 per application.

Both funds will favour applications for capital spending and have the prerequisite that the entire allocated grant is spent and accounted for by 31 March 2008.

Capacity Building

This is a training and mentoring scheme organised and delivered by Surrey Community Action (SCA).

This programme has been set up with funding through the Local Area Agreement (LAA), which is an agreement between central government and a local area, represented by public, private and community sector organisations working in partnership through the local strategic partnership, in Surrey this is the Surrey Strategic Partnership. This programme, which will run till end of March 2008, supports the objectives of the LAA to deliver sustainable communities through better outcomes for local people.

In Surrey the 11 District and Borough Councils come together with the County Council under the Surrey Local Government Association to consider waste. SCC is delivering this programme on behalf of all the councils in Surrey.
