The European Parliament has 626 Members, representing the 370 million people who live in the 15 Member States of the European Union. MEPs meet in Brussels and Strasbourg to scrutinise, amend and vote draft legislation, and approve the annual budget of the European Union. They also debate issues affecting the European Union and draw attention to the problems of their constituents. Elections take place every 5 years, and the last election was held in 2004.
The next European Parliamentary election is to be held on Thursday 4th June 2009 with the count held on Sunday 7th June 2009. More details with regard to candidates standing will be available in early April 2009.
For the European Parliament, England, Scotland and Wales have been divided into 11 Regions, each electing a different number of Members of the European Parliament.
The South East Region for the purposes of the European Parliament includes the Counties of: Buckinghamshire, Hampshire, Kent, Oxfordshire, Surrey and East and West Sussex, and the following Unitary Authorities: Bracknell Forest, Brighton and Hove, Isle of Wight, Medway, Milton Keynes, West Berkshire, Portsmouth, Reading, Slough, Southampton, Windsor and Maidenhead and Wokingham.
