Rediscover the Lost Chertsey Abbey in the Runnymede Room

Chertsey Abbey was one of the most important Medieval Abbeys in England. It was founded in AD 666. It gained a reputation for producing some of the finest decorative tiles in the country during the 13th century. It was destroyed during the 'Dissolution of the Monasteries' by King Henry VIII in 1537. Sadly, very little of the site remains today. The evidence that does survive includes superb painted tiles, masonry, pewter ware and stained glass fragments.
Also a magnificent 10th century Viking sword can be viewed in the Runnymede Room.
